IMS Data Query Tool

Definition of Need

A need exists for IMS customers to easily access real-time IMS Data to perform simple, user-defined, ad-hoc queries from IMS data that may reside in one or multiple data centers.  Currently, there are no solutions commercially available that allow ad-hoc IMS data queries without requiring software plug-ins, developer tool kits, and a high level of customer-side integration to reach a usable and efficient solution deployable within a reasonable time-frame and cost to the customer.

The Solution: DataSniff IMS Data Query Tool

The DataSniff IMS Data Query Tool provides a quick and easy method for querying single, or multiple IMS Databases without the need for costly or time-consuming client-side programming or integration.  With the simple DataSniff web application as the User Interface, authorized users can quickly and easily perform user-defined ad-hoc queries from IMS databases, then merge, filter, and join that data into a single report view.  The DataSniff IMS Data Query Tool can then deliver completed query reports to other applications via XML, other PC's via e-mail, or allow viewing by remote employees via cellular network transmission to smart-phones.

The DataSniff IMS Data Query Tool is comprised of three separate software components:  Mainframe Subsystem Software, Data Access Server (DAS), and a Web Server Application.  The DAS and Web Server Applications reside on a PC within the enterprise network.

Simple 4-Step process to a fully functional IMS Data Query Tool

The following are the only steps required for rapid deployment of a completely functional DataSniff IMS Data Query Tool:

  1. The client provides DataSniff with one or several PSB’s and/or PCB’s that define the structure and location of data being accessed and utilized by other software programs that currently manipulate that data.  The DataSniff IMS Data Query Tool will use these PSB’s and/or PCB’s to automatically generate source-templates that define the format and location of the IMS data to be accessed during the query process.  Multiple PSB’s/PCB’s allow data “merge” and “join” functions by the DataSniff IMS Data Query Tool.  DataSniff can also import Cobol Copy Books to automatically define source-templates as well.
  2. DataSniff sub-system software is loaded and registered to a single mainframe CPU ID, and operates as an authorized sub-system in the mainframe on which it is loaded.  For access and query of multiple data centers in multiple physical locations, the DataSniff sub-system software can be loaded on multiple mainframes to easily query and merge data from several data centers.  After the software is loaded on the mainframe, no customer-side integration or programming is required.
  3. An authorized IT security officer is required to provide access permissions to the DataSniff sub-system software loaded onto the mainframe.
  4. The DataSniff IMS Data Query Tool’s Data Access Server (DAS), and the DataSniff Web Server Application are both installed on a PC residing within the customer’s enterprise network. The DAS communicates with the mainframe subsystem software to facilitate IMS data access.

    PC System Requirements:

    • PC running Microsoft OS (XP, 2000, or 2003)
    • IIS Installed and running (Microsoft Web Server)
    • Local or Networked access to MS SQL Server (Full Version) is required
The DataSniff DAS and DataSniff Web Server Application are both compatible with Virtual Machine environments.

No customer-side integration is required for deployment of the DataSniff IMS Data Query Tool

The DataSniff IMS Data Query Tool can be deployed and fully functional in less than one week (typical deployment 1-3 days).
